Property as a pension – never has there been a better time

As my blog followers will know I believe that effective retirement planning includes property investment, using property as a pension in later years. I recently read an article stating that poor annuity rates are putting the pensions auto-enrolment scheme at risk.

Many of those who have spent years saving see annuity rates as an unacceptable investment of their pension savings and is sending out a very negative impression, jeopardising the auto-enrolment scheme introduced last year.

People currently approaching retirement are in an almost impossible situation, not knowing whether to delay taking an annuity or bite the bullet and go for one now, locking themselves into very poor returns for the rest of their life.

Without a crystal ball no-one knows what the future holds but speculation suggests that annuity rates are still on a slippery slope downwards and the latest Government Autumn statement confirms that the economy is predicted to decline in size again.

The Governments auto-enrolment scheme is designed to ensure everyone makes provision for their future.  However it is a voluntary scheme and one that although employees are automatically enrolled into they can make the decision to opt out.   Initial contributions are deliberately set low to keep it attractive and to prevent employees from excising their right to ‘opt out’.  However, the longer the low annuity rates continue the less attractive staying in the scheme remains.

However the essence of Auto Enrolment remains the same, people need to step up and take responsibility for their own future and they cannot rely on the Government to bail them out.

Forward thinking individuals are looking at alternative ways to secure their retirement and keep control.  Property investment is one such way. Property as a pension is a wise investment choice and could be a lifeline in retirement.
