Overhauling The State Pension – Could Property Investment Save You? | Gill Alton

I believe more and more that property investment is the key to being financially secure in retirement years as the Government has recently published the White Paper and draft Pensions Bill that will affect everyone.

I recently came across an article that outlines how the changes will affect people

Read the article

The White paper outlines the Government’s plans for a new state pension system which means that a single tier pension, which is currently £144 a week, being paid to every qualifying pension from April 2017. The Government is also planning a five year review of the pension age, which is currently in their 60s with the age for men and women equalizing. There will also be an additional means test, topping up the pension for the less wealthy with a Pension Credit, or Minimum Income Guarantee. Those who qualify will receive a minimum £142.70 for a single person and £217.90 for couples.

The State Pension had become so complex it was crying out for an overhaul, however as with all changes there will always be some winners and some losers.

Whether the new regime is considered fair or not, is irrelevant as the fact remains that it will be challenging for a pensioner to live off £144 per week.

So now more so than ever we should be encouraged to make our own pension arrangements, and not rely solely on the State.  Particularly since the new flat rate is not ‘means tested’ so you are not penalised for having savings and investments of your own, as everyone will qualify for the new rate, assuming they have paid enough National Insurance contributions during their working life.

You should provide for your own pension and take the State Pension’s £144 per week and consider this a small bonus for your hard work and diligence in preparing for your own future.

I strongly advocate that property investment geared towards providing a pension is the most sensible way forward – it’s an investment strategy that is proven to work and will offer you the financial security in retirement that we all wish for.
